Concerns about radiological plume from Fukushima

Bottom line, the levels of radiological elements in Yokosuka are extremely low. The radiation levels here, although detectable, pose no danger. There is always some radiation out there - we get it from the sun everyday - and the level they recorded thus far is so small that you would get more during an X-ray. The Navy records anything above 0, and every single one of us and our exposures is being tracked. We are taking precautionary measures consistent with our guidance, and if something changes we are poised to react.

Continue to pray for the citizens of Japan as they struggle through this tragedy.

  1. One additional note - a friend asked me if I had been given Potassium Iodide (KI) tablets to protect me against radiation. Only certain Navy personnel going within a specific distance from Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant are given these tablets as a precautionary measure. Also, these tablets do protect you against radioactive Iodine in the atmosphere, which protects a person against thyroid cancer due to radiation exposure, however in a radioactive environment, such as right around the nuclear power plant in Fukushima, there are many radioactive isotopes, of which radioactive Iodine is only one of them. So, although it does provide some level of protection, it is not all encompassing.
